Anyone involved with meeting tight deadlines quickly realizes the power of ColdFusion. When my marketing organization asked me (Leon) to create a system to assist in revision control for new-product launch materials around the world, I wasn't given much time to do it. Getting large numbers of documents from diverse geographic locations to everyone involved in a product launch concerns any corporation whose business is global in nature. One of the main problems in developing such a system is the ramp-up time required to obtain the necessary tools and skills, particularly if this involves learning a new language. My experience as a Web programmer prompted my management to request that I obtain all documents from the parties involved in the launch process, open and save the documents in Office 95 format and FTP the files to our server. I then had to code an HTML page ... (more)

Setting Up Your Development Server with ColdFusion 5, MX, and BlueDragon

The world of ColdFusion application servers is quite interesting at the moment. Macromedia's recent update to CFMX 6.1 promises to add a lot of stability and speed to the product. BlueDragon, New Atlanta's alternate CFML runtime engine continues to gain momentum. Yet despite these two great products, much of the development out there is still based on ColdFusion 5 (or earlier). What if you're interested in running one or more of these at once? Perhaps you're going to upgrade an app from one server to another? How do you test your current applications for compatibility among the other servers without reconfiguring your development machine? If you're a consultant, or work for a consulting firm, there's a good chance you'll have multiple clients, each with different server requirements. How do you handle the changing requirements without reconfiguring your server ever... (more)

MX Kollection 3 by InterAKT Online

Web development is a changing industry. Technologies are born, thrive, and then die, while web developers experience a great stress helping their clients get an Internet presence. Nowadays, the buzz word in web development is "dynamic." Not "dynamic" as in DHTML, but as in "using a database." MX Kollection is designed for HTML designers that want to take a plunge into database-driven development and here four of the product's beta testers report briefly on how they feel about the product. CSS Skins California developer and Team Macromedia member Nancy Gill reports that it's not the many functions of MX Kollection that are her favorite as much as the simple addition of skinning the interface by site. "I can choose Aqua for the tool's look in Site A and go on to define Site B to show the Arktic skin," she writes. "The advantage in that is that I have so many similar fo... (more)

CFImage Functionality is Just Awesome!

Finally, ColdFusion 8 has incorporated image manipulation directly into the ColdFusion tag and scripting language. No more are we, as developers, chained to third-party products. These products, while excellent in quality, just mean adding one more level of complexity to any application that requires server-side image manipulation. Now, with CFImage and an abundance of image-related functions, ColdFusion has done to image manipulation what it has done to almost every other aspect of Web applications development - it has made it simple. Due to the wide array of image functionality in ColdFusion 8, I am going to try and break this tutorial up into several small and manageable parts. The first part will cover basic reading and writing of images using CFImage and the related image manipulation functions. But, before we get into that, let's just quickly touch upon these ... (more)

Adobe Flash and Flex Accessibility with Screen Readers

First, yes, screen readers can read Flex applications. And yes, its fairly easy. But, I’ll discuss how in a future post. But, if you’d rather send people to your old HTML version of your site when using a read, there is good news. Flash Player has the ability to detect if a screen reader is running on the client machine, even if JavaScript is disabled and/or the Flex application is not compiled as an “accessible swf”. This is possible with the Accessibility class. It is important to note that if the Flex application is compiled as an “accessible swf”, the screen reader will also be able to read content in the swf. If not, the screen reader only reads the words “flash movie start” whenever you interact with it. Talk about a usability buzz kill. So, here is the code to see if a screen reader is currently running (not just installed) and then adds a LinkButton that call... (more)

Christmas Could Never Get Started Today

This time of year is a favorite for children of all ages – I happen to be one of these kids – in part because of the television programs that are shown around Christmas. A Charlie Brown Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, have been favorites of mine since TV went from exclusively black and white to poor quality color. This is no coincidence as these programs were made in the mid 1960’s. As I was watching this year, it occurred to me that if at this time in history Christmas had not yet been established, if somehow Christmas needed to be “started” in 2009, it wouldn’t stand a chance. Christmas would be doomed before it ever got started. First of all, the only time you can say Jesus Christ anymore is when you hit your thumb with a hammer. You can’t mention Him at City Hall, you can’t display a crè... (more)

Dynamic Client-Side Input Validation

Using JavaScript to perform client-side input validation can be simple. However, the task can become more complicated when the set of inputs changes or increases in number, the rules change, or the validation depends on other inputs. This article will show how to create a system to dynamically maintain input fields and validation rules that can be applied to the inputs. Input Validation Most of us have used JavaScript to validate the inputs on a form. Validation is important in order to make sure that the inputs conform to some rules and do not cause problems when these inputs are then saved to a database, or used for some other purpose. When strings are used as input, you may simply want to remove any leading or trailing spaces before the form is submitted. In the case of numbers, there are several common validation rules that might apply: Null is allowed Null is no... (more)
