Sauce Labs Streamlines Manual Software Testing in the Cloud With Sauce Scout

Media-Rich Test Results Accelerate Collaboration Between QA and Development Teams

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/12/11 -- Sauce Labs, the web application testing company, today expanded its suite of testing products with Sauce Scout, a new tool for QA professionals and QA managers that increases the operational value of and reduces the complexity and operational overhead of manual software testing. Sauce Scout leverages key subsystems of Sauce OnDemand, a cloud based testing service, to provide QA teams with a wide selection of browsers and operating systems that can be provisioned in less than 20 seconds for manual testing. Media-rich test results include screen shots and videos of bugs that can be easily shared with development teams to pinpoint problems in complex UI interactions and accelerate development momentum. Sauce Scout requires no coding expertise and pricing begins at $3 per hour with user-selectable plans as low as $2 per hour.

"In the process of working with hundreds of Sauce Labs customers on automated testing, we learned that manual testing remains a critical, labor intensive piece of the development process," said John Dunham, CEO at Sauce Labs. "Sauce Scout is a direct result of customer feedback, and we're excited to help our customers eliminate the pain and expand the usefulness of manual testing with another easy-to-use testing tool that leverages our cloud-based OnDemand service."

While the use of Selenium for automated testing continues to increase in popularity with agile development teams, manual testing remains an important part of most development processes. This is because there are many tests that are not readily automatable -- such as the way objects in an application appear as they move across a screen, or how an application pop-up covers the application itself. Sauce Scout delivers the following benefits to manual testing teams:

  • Improved QA and Dev Collaboration -- In many organizations, manual test results consist of written descriptions of unwanted application behavior by QA that developers later need to visualize to try and reproduce a bug. Sauce Scout streamlines this process by automatically capturing a video and screen shots of the bug as it's discovered so it's easier for developers to pinpoint the root-cause of inappropriate application behavior.

  • Less Infrastructure Headaches -- Manual testing across browsers is time-consuming because it requires separate machines with the specific combination of browser and OS to be tested. Sauce Scout simplifies manual testing by providing QA pros the ability to access a clean version of any browser in less than 20 seconds with just a single click.

  • Extended QA Efficiency -- By automatically logging rich-media recording of caught-in-the-act bug behavior, Sauce Scout dramatically reduces the workload of documenting bugs found in the manual testing process, freeing up time for QA teams to focus on finding more bugs.

Sauce Scout supports the following browsers on Windows: Chrome, Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8, 9; Firefox, 2, 3, 3.5, 3.6, 4; Opera 9, 10, 11; and Safari 3, 4, 5. Browsers supported on Linux include Firefox 3 and 3.6.

While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of S...
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound e...

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
