The transition to microservices-based application development is well underway. About nine out of 10 surveyed organizations are using or have plans to use microservices, and a like number expect to expand their use in the year ahead.1

Likewise, the scope and reach of cloud computing continue to expand beyond its early use for cost-saving, lift-and-shift migration of workloads and services from data centers to the cloud. Since the early days of cloud computing, running workloads on public clouds has become common practice, with an estimated 92 percent of organizations now doing so.2

With such high adoption normalizing the cost benefits, simply being in the cloud may no longer be enough to remain competitive. Worse yet, market forces are demanding more innovation at faster release cycles. Thus, for many organizations, unlocking the next level of cloud benefitswill require a different approach (Figure 1).

Why is a new approach needed? Even though organizations have been moving toward microservices-based application development for several years, there is still a very real concern when it comes to changing legacy monolithic applications. Any one change can affect a system's codebase and disrupt operations in unforeseen ways.

This is where cloud native comes into play. Designed to take advantage of cloud's flexible platform and infrastructure capabilities, cloud native architecture helps organizations to respond quickly and in a scalable, resilient way to operational changes. The combination of cloud native and a microservices-based approach addresses many of the concerns about wholesale changes to legacy, monolithic systems. In the more agile cloud-native, microservices environment, developers and operations teams work hand in hand to deliver small, loosely coupled bundles of software quickly and safely. Instead of a single monolithic system, functionality is carried out by a smaller set of services coordinating their operations.

This shift from monolithic to microservices can yield substantial benefits. However, as with any developing technology, the early-adoption learning curve can be steep. Many organizations consider the pain of managing the monolith to exceed that of making the changes required to adopt microservices.

Still, adoption of the new approach is not likely to be pain free. Only 1 percent of surveyed organizations using microservices architecture indicate that they faced no challenges in the process.3 Microservices require organizations to, one, rethink the software architecture that runs their business now, and two, explore how the organization can adapt to practices that require new technical skills and a matching cultural shift.

In this light, the move to microservices and cloud native can be daunting and risky. But with the right toolsets, the effort required to monitor, manage, and balance thousands of microservices doesn't have to be overwhelming.
